The Journey to Our First Harvest

July and August have been a blur.

In the span of just a few weeks, an anonymous former gardener donated a collection of raised beds. We raised enough funds to fill them with soil. Seasonal Concepts generously donated plants that were on their last leaf, and we rushed to get them into the ground—before we even had access to water.

So we got creative. For three weeks, a devoted group of people hauled water in coolers in the backs of their cars, making trip after trip to keep our new garden alive.

Just when we needed it most, a generous donation gave us the funds to finally secure water access. And the garden responded.

Today, those struggling plants are thriving, and giving back to the community that gave to them. We are now seeing the fruits of our labor. Okra, peppers, basil, and an adorable mini patio-variety of eggplant are now thriving in our sunny garden. Through the end of September, all remaining produce will be donated to the Food Mill, helping bring fresh produce to neighborhoods where access can be limited. As our garden continues to grow, so does our vision for what these harvests can do. We’re exploring long-term partnerships and creative ways to make sure the food we grow reaches the people who can benefit from it most.

All of this would not be possible without the community. Thanks to the volunteers who cleared the lot to make this all possible. Thanks to our in-kind donors have supplied soil, plants, gardening supplies, and raised beds. Thanks to our “watering crew” who have kept the plants alive beyond all odds. Thanks to our financial donors, who have provided the funds needed to obtain water access and complete vital repairs. You are all a piece to the Living Mosaic.
